But this caused yet another problem for the bride. Men that were drunk and became impatient would try to grab and take the garter before she had a chance to toss it.
So the tradition began that the groom would remove the garter from his bride and toss it to the men.
The bride would then toss her bouquet to the single female guests, and it was said whoever caught the bouquet would be the next to marry.
The bouquet toss and garter removal and toss are traditions that have become optional today.
Not all couples will decide do this, but if they do, it's a good idea that the bride buys the garter set instead of just one garter so they can keep one as a memento of their wedding day.
