Make Your Veil in a Custom Design That Suits You!

Why would you want to make your veil, especially if you're not crafty? Some brides make their own veils from the tulle and/or lace of their mother's veil or gown. The veil then holds a great deal of sentimental value for them, something they can pass down to their daughters or grand-daughters.

Some brides just can't find the ideal veil that feels right for them, so they simply design and make their own.

And still others just can't see spending a lot of money for a new veil, and they know they can get the supplies and material cheaper to do it themselves.veil-with-headpiece

What if you can't sew, don't own a machine or you're just afraid you'll mess it up? Maybe you can ask a family member-an aunt, grandparent, cousin, to make your veil for you. You just need to get the supplies.

If you're ready to tackle this project yourself but you're not sure where to begin, here are some ideas and steps to get you started:

  • First you need to come up with your design. Maybe you saw a veil that you just love, but the price is way out there. Take photo of it!
  • Next you need to get the tulle for your veil. The amount of tulle you need will depend whether you're making a simple one-layer veil or two or three layers. Also, how full do you want the veil to be and how long?

If you get enough width of tulle then it'll be very full as you gather the top to attach to your comb or headpiece. Fabric stores salespeople can be very helpful with these decisions since more and more brides are opting to cut costs with do-it-yourself projects.

  • Are you going to make your veil with a straight edge design or will you have lace? Some lace edged veils are beautiful, while other veils look just as stunning with no edging at all because of the fullness of them and the type of headpiece they're attached to.
  • Once you have your tulle and lace edging if you decide to edge the veil, simply gather it together from the top and attach it to the headpiece or comb. You can make your veil using either durable fishing line or heavy duty thread to do the sewing.

  • If you want more fullness, attach the tulle to the back of the comb or headpiece. When you flip it over, it will be fuller.

If you'd like a detachable veil, simply attach the tulle to a comb that can be removed after the wedding. You can leave your headpiece on and remove the veil from underneath.
